Purgatory's Winter Opens in Stages: A Neighbor's Calendar From the Ski Swap to New Year's Eve

Purgatory Resort's event calendar lists Friday, Nov. 20 as the scheduled opening day for the 2026–27 season, running 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. MST. The resort's opening-day listing says the mountain "has already been blanketed with its first few coverings of snow" and calls this "our El Nino winter."

For anyone who lives along US 550 near the resort, Nov. 20 is just one of several dates that matter. Over the next six weeks, the forest roads close, the paid shuttle from Durango starts running, holiday events fill in at the base, and the Nordic trails across the highway open once there's enough snow. Each one changes how the corridor works day to day, and none of them falls on the same day as another.

Two dates come before the lifts turn

Durango Nordic Ski Club is holding its Nordic Night Ski Swap on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pine Needle Mountaineering, 835 Main Avenue in downtown Durango. It's the only event on this list that needs a trip into town.

Three days later comes a deadline. The Durango Nordic homepage advertises a pre-season pass sale "Now Through Nov 15th." The banner doesn't print a year, so check the price at checkout. The club's trail pass page currently lists these options:

Pass Adult Senior 65+ / Veteran Child 5–13
Season ski pass $185 $140 $110
Day ski pass $22 $16 $12
Day snowshoe pass $10 $8 $6
Five-punch ski pass $100

Children under 5 ski free. At $22 for an adult day pass, the $185 season pass pays for itself on the ninth visit. The five-punch pass works out to $20 a visit, so it saves $2 over buying day passes for someone who skis a handful of times.

Pass type also controls how early you can ski. Season-pass holders can get on the trails at 7 a.m., with bathrooms open. Day-pass and five-punch holders start at 9 a.m., and day-pass hours run until 4 p.m. For someone who lives a few minutes up the highway, those two extra hours before work may matter more than the price.

Nov. 20 opens the lifts, not the whole corridor

Opening day is set at the Purgatory Village Express lift at #1 Skier Place. The listing says festivities "to be announced soon." The resort hasn't said which runs or lifts will open first. Any first-day terrain plan you hear for now is a guess.

Two things change in the village that day. The resort's shuttle page says free homeowner and parking-lot shuttles run "from 8:00am – 5:00pm daily, for every day we are in mountain operations." Those shuttles follow the mountain's schedule, so they start when the lifts do.

Paradise Pizzeria is also coming back. According to the resort's dining page, it was closed all of summer 2026 while the resort worked on "updating key infrastructure," and it "will resume operations for the 2026-2027 Winter season." It sits in the main Village Plaza next to Purgatory Sports, across from the ticket office. The menu covers pizza, pasta and salads, and it has a full bar with beer on tap and an ice creamery. The same page lists Powderhouse, Dante's Lodge and Backside Bistro as winter-only venues.

Ten days later, two forest roads close

The lifts open as the forest roads are closing. In the San Juan National Forest's road status table, dated Oct. 25, 2026, Andrews Lake Road, FR 590, is marked weather dependent with a closure date of 11/30. The Haviland Lake and Chris Park roads, FR 671 and 791, show a 5/1 opening and a 11/30 closure. The page also warns that "any road can be blocked by downed trees or snow at any time" and that "the Forest Service and the Counties do not rescue stranded vehicles."

That leaves Nov. 20 through Nov. 30 as the stretch when a resident can ski at Purgatory in the morning and still drive the Haviland or Andrews Lake roads that afternoon, if the weather allows. After Nov. 30, those lakes stop being a quick drive from the corridor.

Thanksgiving week at the base

The resort's first dinner event of the season is a Thanksgiving buffet at Purgy's on Thursday, Nov. 26, with seatings at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. With only two seatings, book early if you want to skip cooking.

Purgatory's activity list for winter also includes snowcat dining. The resort describes a five-course dinner trip that needs reservations at least a day ahead and a minimum of 20 guests. The resort hasn't posted 2026–27 dates for it. The 20-guest minimum makes it a fit for a holiday group or a neighborhood party more than a dinner for two.

Dec. 20, when Durango gets a ride up

The lifts open Nov. 20, and the resort's transportation page lists the $20 skier shuttle from Durango as starting "December 20th." The page doesn't print a year next to that date, so confirm it with the resort before planning around it. The listed morning pickups, in order:

  1. Durango Transit Center, 7:50 a.m.
  2. Durango High School at 24th Street, 8 a.m.
  3. PJ's Gourmet Market, 8:15 a.m.
  4. Tamarron/Glacier, 8:30 a.m.
  5. Arrival Court, 8:50 a.m.

For the first month of the season, anyone visiting from town drives up and parks. Guests at Cascade Village have their own resort shuttle, and the resort tells them to get times and pickup spots from the Cascade Village front desk. Reservations for any of the resort's transportation need 24 hours' notice, and canceling costs $25.

Dec. 20 is also when Santa and Mrs. Claus visit Ski Beach, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. A week earlier, on Sunday, Dec. 13, Purgatory Resort Rentals and Expert Edge hold Demo Days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you're thinking about new skis, that's the day to try a few before you buy.

The Nordic Center opens whenever the snow allows

Every date above comes from a published calendar. Durango Nordic's doesn't. The club's trail pass page lists the 2026–27 opening as TBD, depending on snow and weather.

The Durango Nordic Center is across the highway from Purgatory at 49786 Hwy 550 N. The ski club is a nonprofit that leases the Community Center building for its winter operations. The trails cover 25 km of groomed skate and classic routes plus 8 km of snowshoe paths. New this season, grooming updates will appear live in the Nordic Pulse app, sponsored by Tailwind Nutrition. Before, the club's trail map page pointed skiers to Facebook and Instagram for grooming news. Now you can check the trails on your phone before you leave the house.

A few more things to know before your first visit:

  • No pets. The club's FAQ says the Nordic Center is pet-free, so dog walks belong somewhere else.
  • Lessons. Private 90-minute classic or skate lessons start at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. every day except Tuesday.
  • Rentals. Classic and skate packages and snowshoes are available, and the rental day runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Trail map. The map downloads into the free Avenza app, which shows your location on the trails. Mapmaker Anna Riling of Four Corners Mapping & GIS won first place in the Pro Cartography category of the 2026 GIS Colorado Mapping Contest for it.

The club's first evening event on its home trails is the Full Moon Howler with SJMA on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nordic Center. It's the one event on this list that happens on skis after dark.

Dec. 31 at Ski Beach

The resort's event calendar lists the New Year's Eve Fireworks & Torchlight Parade at Ski Beach on Dec. 31, from 6 to 7 p.m. Ski Beach is the slopeside area at the base of Purgatory Village Express, Lift 1. Bear Bar overlooks it and has live music on select days. With the show over by 7 p.m., there's time for dinner in the village afterward. For families with young kids, it also makes for an early New Year's night.
