The Animas Valley's Overlap Weeks: When the Forest Gates and the Winter Train Share the Calendar

Between mid-November and the end of December, the north end of the Animas Valley loses access to the forest in stages, and the railroad comes back in the same window. Hermosa Park Road is scheduled to close on November 14. The Durango & Silverton returns to the river on November 20. Lower Hermosa Road is scheduled to close on December 31. For roughly six weeks, a resident can still drive to the Hermosa Creek Trail in the morning and catch the winter train up the canyon on the same calendar. That stretch is the most open the valley gets all winter, and it's shorter than it looks.

Everything below is dated. Forest Service gate dates depend on weather, and the business hours come from each business's posted schedule, so treat them as the plan.

The creek crossing that kept crews on Hermosa Park Road into October

The biggest change on the forest side this year happened where Hermosa Creek crosses Forest Road 578, Hermosa Park Road. The San Juan National Forest's Mainstem Hermosa Creek Culvert Installation Project replaces the old low-water vehicle ford with a bottomless arch culvert built so fish can pass through. It also rebuilds about 900 feet of damaged streambed.

The Forest Service describes the work as part of a 30-year native cutthroat trout restoration effort covering 23 stream miles, with Trout Unlimited and Colorado Parks and Wildlife as partners. Earlier Forest Service material identifies the trout in the Hermosa drainage as Colorado River cutthroat.

The formal road closure started September 8 and stays in effect through 11:59 p.m. on October 13, 2026. It covers vehicles, bikes, foot traffic and horses beyond the Hermosa Creek Trailhead intersection. The trailhead itself stays open from the Purgatory and Highway 550 side during the closure, with parking, camping, restrooms and the trailer turnaround. Here's the Forest Service's own update on what's left:

"A full day closure will be required on Oct. 1. Additional road construction with delays up to thirty minutes can be expected until the end of October."

That comes from the Hermosa Creek Watershed page, last updated September 18. As of today, no completion notice has been posted. For updates during construction, the forest runs a project information line at 970-501-5830. One more detail: a separate closure of the roadside areas, which doesn't apply to the road itself, runs until June 30, 2027.

Once the order expires, the posted plan has delays possible through late October, and the road's seasonal closing date comes about two weeks later.

Two Hermosa roads with two different closing dates

Two roads lead to the Hermosa Creek Trail, and they close at different times. That gap is what creates the overlap weeks.

  • Hermosa Park Road, FR 578. This is the upper route from the Purgatory side. The San Juan National Forest road status table lists a seasonal closing date of November 14 for miles 0.4 to 8.7, and November 30 for the stretch past mile 8.7 toward Bolam Pass.
  • Lower Hermosa Road, FR 576. This is the valley-side route. You take County Road 201 off US 550, then FR 576 for 3.5 miles to the lower trailhead. The same table lists it as open May 1 to December 31.

The Forest Service also says Lower Hermosa Road stays open year-round to mechanized use so bikes can reach the Hermosa Creek Trail. That covers bikes. It doesn't mean cars can drive it after the gate date. The table also warns that any road can be blocked by snow or downed trees at any time, and that the Forest Service and the counties do not rescue stranded vehicles.

From the lower trailhead, Trails 2000's Durango Trails guide describes an out-and-back that turns around at the Dutch Creek Trail junction, 12.7 miles in. Most people won't do the whole thing in December daylight. Still, a drive-up lower Hermosa trailhead is something the valley has for six more weeks after the upper road closes.

The valley businesses keep their doors open

While the forest closes in stages, the valley's businesses don't shut down. They shrink their hours and keep going. All of the hours below are posted hours, so check before a holiday-week trip.

James Ranch moved to off-peak hours over Labor Day weekend. Those hours hold until Memorial Day weekend. The Market is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Monday and Tuesday. The James Ranch Grill is on the same days, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The ranch's online events calendar showed nothing from November through March when it was checked.

Honeyville's factory store does the opposite of the ranch. It stays open every day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Labor Day to Memorial Day. The only closures are Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. On a Monday or Tuesday, it's the valley stop that's reliably open.

Durango Hot Springs Resort & Spa on County Road 203 lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and recommends reservations. What does change is the music. Its live-music page lists the Tuesday and Thursday sets, 6 to 9 p.m., as an April-through-October series. The pools stay open into winter, but the regular weeknight concerts end with October.

The railroad comes back to the river on November 20

The Durango & Silverton's summer season runs May through October. Winter trips run late November through early May. Two trains start on the same day this year.

The Polar Express runs November 20, 2026 through January 2, 2027. It's a roughly 65-minute excursion from the Durango Depot, with Santa and hot chocolate. The railroad doesn't say how far up the line it goes before turning around.

The Cascade Canyon Winter Train is the one that actually runs the valley. It leaves Durango at 9:15 a.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m. It follows the Animas River 26 miles each way to the wye at Cascade Station, with a 60-minute layover in Cascade Canyon. Along the way it passes Rockwood Station, which the railroad identifies as the last highway access point between Durango and Silverton.

The Cascade Canyon train runs only on selected dates. It skips November 26, which is Thanksgiving, and December 25. Honeyville closes on those same two days.

The six weeks in one table

This lays the forest gates, the trains and the posted hours on the same calendar. Weekdays are for 2026.

From November 20 to December 31, the valley has a drive-up lower Hermosa trailhead, a winter train up the river, Wednesday-through-Sunday hours at James Ranch, daily hours at Honeyville, and hot springs open until 10 p.m. All of those come from posted schedules. Once the lower gate closes on December 31, the trains are the main way up the canyon until spring.

After the gates close

From January into March, the list of outings gets shorter. Some of what's online is out of date.

The Durango Trails snowshoeing guide suggests the Hermosa Creek Trail as a winter outing that follows the creek. That guide is a repost from 2021. Once FR 576 closes to cars on December 31, getting to the lower trailhead takes more effort than the guide implies.

The same guide lists six kilometers of groomed trails at Purgatory Nordic Center, plus Old Lime Creek Road above Cascade Canyon. The current Forest Service road table lists Lime Creek Road as partially closed because of damage from the October 2025 flood. Check the Forest Service conditions page before planning a Lime Creek outing around that older recommendation.

The Cascade Canyon train keeps running after the holidays. Its January dates are 1–3, 9, 10, 15–18, 23, 24 and 29–31. In February it runs the 6th, 7th, 12th through 15th, 20th, 21st and 26th through 28th. Every day from March 1 to 28 is on the schedule, and April has more dates.

I keep track of these dates for the north end of the valley because the season changes property here too. Gates close, hours shrink, and the calendar changes what a place is like to own. If you're curious how this winter compares with past ones, or what that means for a home in the valley, Jeremy Deas at SWCO Home Sales is glad to talk it through.
